Over-the-Rhine is an urban neighborhood in Cincinnati, just north of the city center.
It's my neighborhood, and as I walk the streets, I ask people if I may take their picture.
About half agree to this. They smile. Then I request they not smile.
The first photos I take of each person usually show the shadow of a smile.
After a few photos the smile fades and a different person emerges.
The contrast is often striking.
